Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at BGLC

What is PBIS?

  • PBIS is a framework for sustaining a positive school environment in which the focus is on defining, teaching and supporting appropriate behaviors in and out of the classroom.

  • PBIS is a widely accepted, research-based approach for reducing inappropriate and challenging behaviors overall in a school, family, or community setting.

  • PBIS has three levels of implementation: school-wide, classroom, and individual student.

How are we implementing PBIS at BGLC?

  • Teachers establish a calm and caring environment with many opportunities for success.

  • Each teacher develops a positive behavior support system in their classroom that includes acknowledgements, such as praise, preferred activities, stickers, and other positive reinforcers for effort and/or work completed.

  • When students do not follow directions, demonstrate effort, or complete work, to the level of their ability of course, they do not earn these acknowledgments. The focus is always on positive and proactive measures.

What happens when a student demonstrates persistent, challenging behaviors that do not respond to the school-wide and classroom PBIS?

  • Teachers consult with each other, classroom staff, and ancillary staff to brainstorm possible additional or alternative supports for that student.

  • If needed, problem-solving continues with our Behavior Intervention Team and outside agencies, if available.

  • Parent input and collaboration are included in these processes.

  • A student may require a formal Functional Behavior Assessment and Positive Behavior Support Plan.  Parents are informed of such plans and are requested to collaborate on their development.

Learning Center Roadrunners ROCK!

Four easy-to-remember guidelines for success: Respect, On-Task, Citizenship, Kindness

We keep it positive, instructing students on what it means to "ROCK!" in all areas of our school.

Expected behaviors are stated positively and simply and will be instructed along with visual supports.

Acknowledgements: If your student comes home with a "You Rock!" sticker, it means they have been recognized for demonstrating Rockin' Roadrunner behavior.
